LVP Flooring Cost Calculator

Can I DIY? ยท DIY-Friendly

Estimate the total cost to install Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) flooring by grade, core type, and plank width โ€” with order quantity and comparison against carpet and laminate.

LVP Flooring Cost in 2026

LVP flooring runs $3โ€“$9/sq ft installed โ€” these are installed figures, material and labor combined, not a material-only price. By wear-layer grade:

GradeCost per sq ft installed
12 mil (standard)$3โ€“$5
20 mil (premium)$4โ€“$7
28 mil+ (wide-plank luxury)$6โ€“$9

For a 500 sq ft room at the overall $3โ€“$9/sq ft installed range, that's 500 ร— $3 = $1,500 at the low end and 500 ร— $9 = $4,500 at the high end โ€” both material and labor. Use the calculator below to narrow that to your grade and core type.

12 mil is the residential standard. Upgrade to 20 mil for pets and heavy traffic.

Most popular residential choice. Handles moderate traffic, pets, and daily wear. 15โ€“25 year residential warranty.

Core type

SPC is denser and more rigid. WPC has a softer feel underfoot.

Rigid stone-composite core. Best for temperature-fluctuating spaces (garages, sunrooms). More impact resistant.

Plank width

Wide planks (5โ€“9") look more like real hardwood but cost slightly more.

Most popular width. Good balance of looks and installation ease.

LVP flooring cost overview

LVP flooring installation costs $3โ€“$9 per square foot installed. Standard residential (12 mil wear layer) runs $3โ€“$5/sq ft. Premium (20 mil) reaches $4โ€“$7/sq ft. Wide-plank luxury (28 mil+) can hit $6โ€“$9/sq ft installed.

LVP is 100% waterproof, DIY-friendly, and handles pets and heavy traffic with ease. It's the most popular flooring choice for kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and whole-home renovations.

How it works

1

Enter room square footage

Measure length ร— width for each room, then add 10% for waste and cuts.

2

Choose LVP grade

Select wear layer thickness (6โ€“20 mil) โ€” thicker = better for high traffic and pets.

3

Compare to alternatives

What's included โ€” and what's extra

Usually included

  • LVP planks (with attached or separate underlayment)
  • Floating click-lock installation
  • Basic transitions & quarter-round
  • Standard room prep

Often extra

  • Old-floor removal & disposal ($1โ€“$2/sq ft)
  • Subfloor leveling / repair
  • Furniture moving & appliance disconnect
  • Stairs & intricate cuts

Wear layer & core, explained

  • Wear layer (mils): the clear top coat that resists scratches. 12 mil suits light residential; 20 mil handles kids and pets; 28 mil+ is commercial-grade. This is the single best predictor of how long the floor lasts.
  • Rigid core (SPC vs WPC): SPC (stone-plastic) is denser, more dent-resistant, and best over imperfect subfloors; WPC (wood-plastic) is softer and warmer underfoot. Both are 100% waterproof.
  • Thickness & underlayment: thicker planks (6โ€“8 mm) feel more solid and quiet; an attached pad saves a step.

Subfloor prep & DIY vs. pro

LVP is forgiving but not magic โ€” the subfloor must be clean, dry, and flat within about 3/16" over 10 ft, or planks will flex and click apart. Floating click-lock LVP is one of the most DIY-friendly floors and can save the $2โ€“$4/sq ft labor, but pros are worth it for large areas, lots of cuts, or an out-of-level subfloor. Acclimate the planks in the room for 48 hours first.

Brands & warranty

Popular lines: COREtec and Shaw/Mohawk (mid-to-premium), LifeProof and SmartCore (retail value), Pergo (name-brand mid-range). Higher tiers pair a thicker wear layer with a denser SPC core.

Warranty: residential wear warranties run 15โ€“30 years (lifetime on premium lines) โ€” but they hinge on correct installation over a proper subfloor and often exclude DIY jobs or commercial use. Keep your receipt and installation photos.

Methodology & sources

The cost figures on this page are generated from a single, sourced cost-data file (Per sq ft installed, material + labor. National average estimate for 2026.). Thicker wear layers (20โ€“28 mil+) and rigid-core (SPC) cost more but are more durable and waterproof. DIY click-lock installation can lower labor. Premium wide-plank luxury lines run higher. About this calculator

How much does LVP flooring installation cost?+

LVP flooring installation costs $3โ€“$9 per square foot fully installed โ€” material and labor combined. Standard residential (12 mil wear layer) costs $3โ€“$5/sq ft. Premium (20 mil) runs $4โ€“$7/sq ft. Wide-plank luxury (28 mil+) can reach $6โ€“$9/sq ft. For a 500 sq ft room, that's $1,500โ€“$4,500 total installed across the full grade range.

SPC vs WPC LVP โ€” which is better?+

SPC (Stone Polymer Composite) is denser, harder, and more dimensionally stable โ€” it handles temperature extremes better and is better for commercial use or areas with temperature swings. WPC (Wood Polymer Composite) is softer and warmer underfoot with built-in foam underlayment, making it more comfortable in living areas. For most homes, SPC is the better choice for durability; WPC is preferred where comfort is the priority.

What wear layer thickness do I need?+

12 mil (0.3mm) is the residential standard โ€” appropriate for most bedrooms, living rooms, and dining areas. Upgrade to 20 mil (0.5mm) for high-traffic areas, homes with pets, or heavy furniture. 28 mil+ (0.7mm+) is commercial grade โ€” warranted for 25+ years and appropriate for the most demanding residential use. Budget 6 mil products are suitable only for low-traffic rooms or rentals.

LVP vs hardwood โ€” which should I choose?+

LVP costs $3โ€“$9/sq ft installed, well under hardwood's per-square-foot installed price (see our hardwood flooring cost calculator for that range). LVP is 100% waterproof, requires no refinishing, and handles pets, kids, and heavy traffic better. Hardwood can be refinished 3โ€“5 times and lasts 50โ€“100+ years. It adds more proven resale value in luxury markets. For most practical homeowners, LVP wins on value and durability. For luxury homes where authentic hardwood commands a premium, real hardwood may be worth the investment.

How much would LVP flooring cost for a 500 sq ft room?+

At the overall $3โ€“$9/sq ft installed range, a 500 sq ft room costs $1,500 (500 ร— $3) to $4,500 (500 ร— $9) fully installed. In standard 12 mil grade specifically, the same room runs $1,500โ€“$2,500 (500 sq ft ร— $3โ€“$5/sq ft).

Is the LVP cost per square foot material only or installed?+

The $3โ€“$9/sq ft figures on this page are installed costs โ€” material and labor combined, not a material-only price. There is no separate labor-only breakdown; the price includes the planks, underlayment where applicable, and floating click-lock installation labor.
