Fiber types & why padding matters
- Nylon: the most durable and resilient โ best for stairs and high-traffic areas. Lasts 10โ15 years.
- Polyester (PET): soft and stain-resistant, budget-friendly, but crushes faster in traffic.
- Triexta (SmartStrand): soft with built-in stain resistance and good durability โ great for pets and kids.
- Wool: premium natural fiber, luxurious and long-lasting (20โ30+ years) at a higher price.
Don't skimp on padding โ a quality 6โ8 lb rebond pad makes a budget carpet feel premium and can add 2โ5 years of life. It's the cheapest upgrade you can make.
Repair or replace? (and when to restretch)
Repair or restretch when the carpet is otherwise sound but has ripples, a loose seam, or a small stained/burned patch (a pro can patch from a closet remnant). Replace when it's matted flat in the traffic lanes, the backing is delaminating, there's pet-odor saturation into the pad, or it's simply worn past its 8โ12 year life.
Brands, hiring & warranty
Popular brands: Shaw and Mohawk (the two largest, value-to-premium), Stainmaster (nylon known for stain resistance), and Karastan (premium wool and nylon).
Questions to ask โ and red flags:
- Is padding, old-carpet removal, and furniture moving included?
- How are seams placed (away from doorways/traffic lines)?
- Per-sq-ft price with the pad grade spelled out. (A cheap thin pad is a common hidden downgrade.)
Warranty: carpets carry separate wear, stain, and texture-retention warranties (5 years to lifetime) โ but they usually require professional installation and proof of regular cleaning to stay valid.
Methodology & sources
The cost figures on this page are generated from a single, sourced cost-data file (Per sq ft installed, carpet + pad + labor. National average estimate for 2026.). Budget polyester starts near $2/sq ft; premium wool reaches $17/sq ft. Stairs, furniture moving, and old-carpet removal add cost. Last verified July 2026.
