How It Works
Count your downspouts
One downspout is recommended for every 20–40 LF of gutter run.
Choose material & size
Most homes use 3×4 inch aluminum. Larger roofs may need 4×5 inch.
Add extensions
Underground or surface extensions keep water away from your foundation.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much do downspouts cost to install?
Downspout installation costs $75–$200 per downspout for aluminum. A typical home needs 4–8 downspouts. Total downspout costs including material and labor run $300–$1,600 for most homes. Copper downspouts cost significantly more at $200–$500 each. Extensions to direct water away from the foundation add $10–$30 per extension.
How many downspouts do I need?
Roofing codes and best practices recommend one downspout for every 30–40 linear feet of gutter. A 2×3 inch downspout handles about 600 sq ft of roof. A 3×4 inch downspout handles about 1,200 sq ft. Most homes need 4–8 downspouts. Complex roofs with many valleys may need more. Insufficient downspouts lead to gutter overflow and foundation damage.
How far should downspouts extend from the house?
Downspouts should extend at least 4–6 feet from the foundation to prevent water infiltration and basement flooding. Extensions, splash blocks, and underground drains can help achieve proper drainage. In areas with clay soil or high water tables, 10+ feet may be needed. Slope extensions away from the house at a minimum 1/4 inch per foot.
What size downspout do I need?
Standard residential downspout sizes are 2×3 inches (handles small roof areas up to 600 sq ft per downspout) and 3×4 inches (handles up to 1,200 sq ft per downspout). In high-rainfall areas or for larger roof sections, use 3×4 inch as the default. Round downspouts are also available in 3-inch and 4-inch diameters.
