Attic Insulation Replacement Cost Calculator
Estimate the total cost to remove old attic insulation and install new — including mold, pest, or asbestos remediation if needed.
How It Works
Enter attic area
Input the square footage of your attic floor — matches home footprint for most homes.
Assess existing insulation
Identify if existing insulation has mold, pest damage, or moisture issues requiring full removal.
Choose new insulation type
Select blown-in cellulose, fiberglass batts, or spray foam for the replacement.
What Drives Replacement Cost?
Removal Cost
$1.00 – $2.50 per sq ft for old insulation removal, higher in tight crawl spaces.
Remediation
Mold, pest, or asbestos remediation adds $300 – $5,000 depending on severity.
New Insulation
Blown-in cellulose and fiberglass are the most cost-effective replacements.
Tax Credit
New insulation qualifies for a 30% federal tax credit up to $1,200.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to remove and replace attic insulation?
Full attic insulation replacement costs $3,000–$10,000 for a typical 1,000–1,500 sq ft attic. This includes old insulation removal ($1.00–$2.50/sq ft), new insulation installation ($1.80–$3.50/sq ft), and disposal. Remediation for mold, pests, or asbestos adds $300–$5,000+ depending on severity. The 30% federal tax credit applies to new installation costs up to $1,200.
When should attic insulation be replaced?
Replace attic insulation if you find: pest infestation (mice, squirrels, raccoons) or droppings throughout the insulation; mold or moisture damage; suspected asbestos (in homes built before 1980 with vermiculite insulation); severe settling that has reduced the R-value significantly; or fire or smoke damage. Normal settling over decades is common but can often be topped up rather than fully replaced.
Does attic insulation contain asbestos?
Vermiculite insulation (looks like small gray pebbles, common in homes built 1940s–1980s) may contain asbestos and should be tested before disturbing. Standard blown-in cellulose, fiberglass batts, or fiberglass blown-in does not contain asbestos. If you have vermiculite, have it tested by a certified asbestos inspector before doing any attic work. Asbestos abatement costs $1,500–$5,000 for an attic.
Can I add new insulation on top of old insulation?
Yes — if the existing insulation is clean, dry, and free of pests, you can add new insulation on top without removing the old. This is the most cost-effective approach. Simply top up to the recommended R-value. Removal is only needed when old insulation is damaged, contaminated, or severely compressed. Adding to existing insulation also qualifies for the 30% federal tax credit.
